The purpose of the MHIRT program is to enable The University of Texas at El Paso to offer short-term international research training and educational opportunities for Hispanic undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in UTEP’s College of Health Sciences and/or majoring in Nursing, Biology, Psychology, or Pre-med/dental. The students attend a summer institute in which they receive education regarding Hispanic health disparities and how to conduct culturally, ethically, and linguistically relevant research including methodologies, data collection, analysis, and management, interpretation of results. The summer institute is followed by a supervised international research experience in collaboration with UTEP investigators and international researchers. Helix Solutions has evaluated the program since 2008, collaborating with UTEP faculty to assess program outcomes as well as students’ and international faculty’s satisfaction with the program. Helix Solutions is also responsible for collecting and analyzing the data and compiling a report of the evaluation’s findings.
